Beware, especially in Michigan

The Michigan State House has just passed a bill (HB-5006), which allows doctors to refuse to treat homosexuals.

More specifically, it protects the "right" of any health care worker (including doctors, dentists, mental health professionals, nurses, pharmacists, chiropractors, optometrists, nurse's aides and medical students) to declare themselves a "conscientious objector" and thereafter refuse care based on the type of treatment or the nature of the person treated.

There are exceptions: they cannot refuse to treat an emergency patient, or help in a public health crisis, or for reasons prohibited in their Civil Rights law (religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, or marital status), or because the patient has a particular disease. Note that homosexuals aren't covered here, transsexuals generally aren't included in sex discrimination protection.

This also means that they can refuse to provide contraception, or pick and choose any other service they object to offering. By my reading of this bill, a doctor can convert to being a Christian Scientist, legally object to providing all medical care (other than prayer), and their employer can't do a thing about it. A pharmacist, if he's clever about the wording, could refuse to distribute AZT and other drugs required for AIDS treatment.

This abomination is not a law yet, but it will be if it passes the Michigan State Senate.

We live in dangerous times.
